How to Find the Qibla Direction (3 Reliable Ways)

The Qibla is the direction Muslims face during prayer — toward the Kaaba in the Sacred Mosque in Makkah. Facing it correctly is a condition of a valid prayer, so it helps to know several ways to find it.

1. Use a Qibla compass app

The fastest and most accurate method is a dedicated Qibla compass. Apps combine your phone's GPS location with the exact coordinates of the Kaaba (21.4225° N, 39.8262° E) and compute the great-circle bearing — the shortest path across the curved surface of the Earth. The result is shown as an angle from North and an arrow that points straight to Makkah.

For the most accurate reading: hold the phone flat, keep it away from metal objects and magnets, and calibrate the compass by moving it in a figure-8 motion if your phone asks you to.

2. Use the sun (no device needed)

You can estimate the Qibla from the sun's position if you know roughly where Makkah is relative to you:

• From North America and Europe, the Qibla is generally toward the east / south-east.
• From East and South-East Asia, it is toward the west.
• From Southern Africa, it is toward the north / north-east.

Twice a year the sun passes directly over the Kaaba (around 27–28 May and 15–16 July). At that exact moment, anywhere the sun is visible, your shadow points away from the Qibla — so facing the sun means facing Makkah.

3. Use exact coordinates

Common mistakes to avoid
